  • how aspects of film form are used to encourage a particular response
  • to what extent spectators respond in the same way to those aspects of film form

This essay will explore how far the spectators response throughout the film of Captain Fantastic in the same way. Spectatorship is how individuals consume, engage and respond to a film.

The filmmakers use a range of key and structural elements of film to respond in a particular way to a film for example in Captain Fantastic the opening scene when we see a person covered in mud and the hunt to kill this innocent stag who is none the wiser about what is going on the killing of the stag shows them as brutal humans and is not clear what era and century we are in. This could have multiple spectators respond differently as a vegan or vegetarian you respond in shock and may also feel very disgusted with the act that they have just seen which would be an oppositional response. Whereas another person for example not a vegetarian the spectator could possibly just think it is the way of the world and the food chain and how life is and may agree with the killing of the animal which would be a dominant response. Another response to this particular scene could be a spectator not agreeing with the killing of the innocent stag but agrees with the fact of how they live this is a . The scene is made all the more shocking as it is put next to a scene of happiness and playing in the stream which is very confusing for the spectator as we are still not shown much more than that of a family have hunted a stag and are now playing in the stream together as if they have not just witnessed the killing of an animal which could be seen as inhuman and vulgar doing so.

Spectators could respond differently to the walking into funeral where Lesley's parents are planning on burying her which we later found out when Ben speaks of her will and that she wishes to be cremated and her remain be flushed down the toilet. Spectators could respond by saying that Ben is out of order walking into the funeral which he was told not to go to this would be a dominant response. On the other hand another spectator could respond that it is not up to Jack to control what happens at Ben wife's funeral especially when in it against her wishes in her will and testament which would be an oppositional response. Another response to this particular scene would be a negotiated response where they argue for both sides of the scene for example Ben walking in seen as out of order but then also thinking that Jack is wrong as well because he shouldn't have stopped them going to the funeral.

To conclude, spectators do not respond to a an film in the same way as this is affected by what the spectator believes, how they watch the film, who they watch it with, their gender and also the spectators age it could also be affected by there personal experience. All these things affect the spectators response to the film and what they think because if they are younger and don't understand politic this could mean some of the things in this specific film would not make sense or would go over their heads. On the other hand if you watch it with your friends and they have different politic views to you then this would be clear you would not respond in the same way. Also if you have had someone who has being drilling politic down your throat and you know how it feel to be the odd one out and not be seen as normal then you may sympathise with this film more. These scenes prove that spectators do not respond in the same way it being dependant on who you are and what you believe.
