In this clip the setting is shown as there is continuous rain through which is pathetic fallacy which conveys the presence of evil spirits there before we even get to see it, which sets a very dark and there is a sense of danger through this part of the clip. Then the lighting that is used is soft fill lighting this makes her look very pale this also adds to her looking scared but trying to look strong by shouting at the demon and stating that she has it's name which gives her power making her seem more confident contradicted by the lighting making her look pale. There is also a lack of lighting when we go to her husband in the house fumbling up the stairs trying to find his daughter, he also shouting trying to show he is not afraid of any spirits or the crooked man. The use of lightning is to make the seen more demonic and foreshadowing what she has already dreamed about her husband being impaled which was struck by lightning. This makes her very apprehensive and worried about what might happen to her child who is possessed and husband trying to save her life. The lightning might suggest the power that Valak possesses is being shown when Lorraine has found it's name and has power against it. The use of close shots are very much used in this clip as the cameraman wants to capture the emotion on there faces. There is also thunder used throughout the clip which suggest there is a storm about to happen foreshadowing the face of that is about to come about. There are also high angle shots used to give us a clearer picture of what is happening towards the end of the clip showing a wider view. The movement of the camera is also very well used as at the beginning it moves round Lorraine while she is shouting at the demon suggesting that the world is surrounding her and making it look like her world might end if she doesn't remember the name of the demon. The other reason for this is to make it seem more intense for the audience. The makeup is used in this clip is on the demon nuns face to make it look very scary and demonic this also adds to the fact that it is a horror film, makeup is key element to a good horror film contains lots of makeup. They have also put contact into Janet's eyes to make her look even more demonic and look even more possessed than she already does. Makeup is also used on the Crooked man's face to make him look demonic and scary. Makeup is used massively in the last bit of the clip as the demonic looking nun is destroyed. The editing throughout this clip is very important and is used to build suspense and excitement about what will happen to the demon called Valak because she knows it's name. The editing is also very fast in the last section of the clip because it was a very important part and the build made the death of the demon all that thrilling. The editing allows us to see it from many different angles which gives us a better view on the situation and how the demon is destroyed. The sound in this clip is used to also create a more apprehensive atmosphere and make it seem more thriller and horrific non-diegetic music is used at the beginning to add to her shouting at the demon and then when the scene switches to Lorraine husband and there is no non-diegetic sound used because it want to create suspense of when the Crooked man scares him in the tent. However there is a lot of diegetic sound as the rain, footsteps, the car boot opening and the Zoetrope which has a little tune coming from it about the Crooked man. Then the non-diegetic music comes back as the daughter, Janet, tries to jump out the window and would land on the spike and be impaled.

Literacy point- don't forget to write extended pieces of work using paragraphs.
ReplyDeleteSome good analysis at times but you are a little descriptive in some of the points you are making.
WWW-good references to the lighting and how it has been used to create meaning in the clip.
EBI- You have discussed the use of editing in establishing pace and angles (although this is more cinematography). However you ought to discuss more how time and space have also been communicated to the audience through the use of editing. (temporal and spatial considerations)
Show me- reply to this post and explain how the editing in the clip creates a sense of time and space so the audience understands the locations and the passage of time, use relevant examples from the clip.
Show me - The sense of space is establishes right at the beginning of the clip as it circles around her while she is shouting at the demon and the sense of time is created through the clip by all shots being straight after one another. The eagle eye shot is giving us more of a sense of where about the spike and the window that the daughter falls out off are, the location is easy to understand and if asked would be able to draw the position of everything within the scene showing that the editing is well done.
