Answer of the British Films

Explore how narrative structure or narrational devices are used in both of your chosen films [40]

This essay will examine how narrative structure is used in This is England and then go on to talk about how narrational devices are used in Trainspotting. Narrative structure is all about the organisation of key elements of the story into an order, the codes are used to develop the story line and to show binary opposites are there throughout This is England. Then narrational devices are things like the voice over  throughout the film of Trainspotting.

In This is England narrative structure is used to show the whole story of Shaun and his life after his fathers death. The Equilibrium is the peace at the beginning and it starts with the opposing forces are in balance. Secondly is the Disruption which is the next phase of the film when the peace is disrupted by an event. Thirdly which is the recognition which is when the main characters realise that the state of equilibrium has been disrupted. Fourthly is the reparation this is when the characters attempt to repair the disruption to get it back to the equilibrium. The final stage is the resolution which is when the equilibrium is restored to a better or equal normality to before. In This is England the equilibrium of the film is between the beginning and then up to the point of meeting Woody and the skin head gang and the scene is set and the characters are introduced. The disruption comes quite quickly in the film as we meet Combo and friends which then leads to conflict as the group splits shortly after and Shaun chooses Combo which then it is unclear who the antagonist is. The recognition of the film is where Shaun is influenced by Combo which makes Shaun very racist and very much for the National front part of politics, which is were the turning point is for Shaun and we get a glance into his future and it doesn't look great. The reparation is when Combo loses it with Milky and beats him up this is a major incident which would be classed as aftermath of what Combo believes and now Shaun has been lead down the wrong path and has seen that side to life. However in this film there isn't so much a restoration as all Shaun shows the audience is him throw away the England flag which suggests to the audience he is throwing away that idea and side of himself which could be classed as a resolution of sorts. This structure doesn't fit the film perfectly as there is more than one point where there could be a disruption.

In Trainspotting narrational devices are used in throughout such as the flashbacks, voice over, flash forwards and also music over certain parts. The flashbacks and flash forwards are used at the beginning of Trainspotting when Renton and Spud are running away from people after they have stolen things from a shop. This also a part where the audience hears the voice over and what Renton thinks about life at that point in his life which says  "choose life, choose a job, choose a career, choose a family, choose a f***ing big television ect". The 1990's music in Trainspotting shows rebellion with Iggy Pop's song Lust for life this shows the destructiveness of Renton and how he is abusing drugs and how he is trying to overthrow society.  At the end there is uplifting music which is a track called Born slippy by Underworld which is a dance track reflecting the change that he has just made to his life. Voice overs are used throughout the whole film to show the audience how Renton is feeling at that moment which is very important and gives the audience that extra insight into his life and thoughts.

Overall different aspects of both films have made them very good and interesting films to watch. This is for many reasons which are described above however there are reasons the films don't quite fit normality, which are for example This is England doesn't fit the structure set for others films which makes it different and some spectators like different and being surprised with what happens next where as other spectators like normality and a film following a certain structure. The same could be said for Trainspotting it doesn't follow any pattern or anything like that it does it's own thing especially with music as the music sometimes doesn't fit the scene which is called non synchronous music which is also very well done.
