Trainspotting opening and final scenes

In the opening sequence sets the scene for the film when Renton and Spud have stolen stuff to pay for drugs because it doesn't start in chronological order because we see the decision by Renton to go back on drugs. This first scene also has Renton talking over the action with the music in the background he talks about different things that don't matter to him because he has Heroin which makes his life what it is. He says "choose life, choose a job, choose a career, choose a family, choose a f***ing big television ect" which has contrast with what he say in the last scene where he wants the big television and wants a family and wants to pay tax and become part of the economy and join society again. He says all the things he says ironically because he didn't want all them at the beginning because he had Heroin. At the beginning e is pessimistic and at the end he is optimistic the music always shows this. Ironically he has stolen from someone at the beginning and the end showing he hasn't truly changed.

Thatcherism has been described as the beliefs of the British government under Margaret Thatcher as prime minister from 1979 to 1990. She believed victorian family values were they way to improve society, through people bettering themselves. This was not just through economic means, "but there was an element of it being linked to respectability and societal values", Prof Toye says. This is shown in Trainspotting when Renton says what he feels about being Scottish "It's sh*** being Scottish, we are the lowest of the low, the scum of the f***ing earth [...] some people hate the english i don't their just w***ers, we on the other hand are colonised by w***ers". Then at the end he walks off and says he want to join society and make something of his life with all the things he didn't want at the beginning. Also when Spud goes for a job interview is the consequences of Thatcherism the poor and unemployed not being able to get jobs and taking drugs for fun and entertainment.

Aids is mentions three times in the film Trainspotting for example when Renton is working through his withdrawal and the games show part comes up with his parents as the contestants and the questions is "The human deficiency virus is a? and his dad answers "a retro virus". The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a lentivirus (a subgroup of retrovirus) that causes HIV infection and over time acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Then the next occurrence of Aids is when Renton gets tested for Aids and he says "it seems however i really i am the luckiest guy in the world several years of addition right in the middle of an epidemic surrounded by the living dead but not me i'm negative it is official and once the pain goes away thats when the real battle starts depression, boredom you feel so f***ing low you want to f***ing top yourself".

The music is very well thought out in this film as it uses non synchronous sound which is sound that doesn't fit the thing that is happening visually. The 1990's music in Trainspotting shows rebellion with Iggy Pop's song Lust for life this shows the destructiveness of Renton and how he is abusing drugs and how he is trying to overthrow society. Over the corse of the film the music comes more optimistic as Renton's battle continues which is show with different pieces of music. Classic music is also used when Renton does down the toilet which juxtaposes with the music being classical. The piece Perfect day by Lou Reed is used when Renton has overdosed which is very ironic because this is the start of something for him as a person.  At the end there is uplifting music which is a track called Born slippy by Underworld which is a dance track reflecting the change that he has just made to his life.
