Gender roles Vertigo and OFOTCN

Cuckoo's Nest 1. The male characters are "metaphorically castrated" by sexless and loveless females who lack femininity. There is three times where this occurs: McMurphy refuses to take his medication and Nurse Ratched says "if he does want to take it orally then we can arrange it some other way". Nurse Ratched also threatens Billy when he has slept with Candy to tell his mother. When Candy comes out the room when the older nurse says to Turkle to get her off the ward. 2. Female character represent both sexual repression and sexual liberation. Sexual repression is Nurse Ratched as she not in a relationships sexually as she is a figure of authority. Sexual liberation is Candy as she sleeps with Billy without batting an eyelid and also kisses McMurphy before she sleeps with Billy. 3. Masculinity is represent as a passive in contrast to stereotypical cinema representations. All the patients are very passive with how they are tried with no humanity an...

Mise-en-scene in the credits of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

1. What does the imagery of the opening shots (the credit sequence) suggest to the audience? The opening sequence with the credits suggest to the audience that there is a bright character full of life as a car which represents McMurphy as it is speedy full of pace and light however he also in the car as he cuts through the darkness around the mountains shown in the credit sequence. The mountain is the bleak and cold place which is the mental institution and McMurphy is like a breath of fresh air. By the end McMurphy has pierced through the lives of the other characters and have left them with a very much changed perspective of humanity and how they should live their lives. 2. Compare the different ways that we are introduced to the two main characters Nurse Ratched and RP McMurphy. When we first meet the characters, Nurse Ratched is the first person we meet in the film which would represent the dominance she has over McMurphy throughout the film as she is a Nurse and he is a men...

Analysis of Vertigo (opening sequence)

The opening sequence of Vertigo poses a number of enigmas such as Does Scottie get his fear if heights from that incident? or How does he get of the roof?  The purpose of the opening sequence is to show us that he has Acrophobia which is an important part of the film. In the opening sequence we learn certain thinks about Scottie for example his emotional disturbance by one of his colleagues who die trying to save his life. In the opening sequence we also are introduced to the central character and he has a haramtia which leads to his downfall.  There is an extreme close up of the woman’s eye during the credits which widens abruptly as if she is shocked or scared and at the same time the shot has been edited to go a blood red which shows the connotation of danger. As this is happening the music becomes louder and faster to build more tension and keep the audience on the edge of there seat. The use of red to symbolise danger, violence, blood and death is comm...
