Plot Summary Vertigo

Plot Summary

The film Vertigo is about a man called Gavin Elster as a retired police detective "Scottie" who has acrophobia (a fear of heights) to come out of retirement and help a friend from his college days by keeping an eye on his wife Madeleine who he fears is possessed by a dead women called Carlotta Valdes. We see throughout the film that Scottie falls in love with Madeleine Elster as he is following her and when he interacts with after she jumps into the bay. There are hints throughout given to say she is possessed by Carlotta. Towards the end we find that Madeleine as died Scottie not being able to get to the top of stairs because of his acrophobia. After her death he looks for people like her and comes across Judy and we are show the twist in the plot as we discover that Judy played Madeleine and helped Elster kill is wife and say it was a suicide with no consequences. When Scottie comes across Judy he sees the resemblance between them and tries to change her to like Madeleine and when it comes to the end he tries to relive the place and how Madeleine died and tells her that he knows all about the death of the real Madeleine as they go up the stairs. Then a shadow appears from the corner and scares her and as she steps backwards she falls to her death through a window like Madeleine was suppose to.

My personal opinion of the film is that it was a well thought out film for it's time in 1958 and the use of a contra zoom shot but I personally thought it was not an engaging story line as it was a slow burner and I could relate with the main character. The performance of the characters was medium I don't think they were good actors personally but I thought for the time it was created with not as good cameras they filmed the car scenes very well. The editing was also very good for it's time. The narrative of the film addresses the key issues of mental health, gender roles and obsession.
