Gender roles Vertigo and OFOTCN

Cuckoo's Nest

1. The male characters are "metaphorically castrated" by sexless and loveless females who lack femininity.
There is three times where this occurs:

  • McMurphy refuses to take his medication and Nurse Ratched says "if he does want to take it orally then we can arrange it some other way".
  • Nurse Ratched also threatens Billy when he has slept with Candy to tell his mother.
  • When Candy comes out the room when the older nurse says to Turkle to get her off the ward.
2. Female character represent both sexual repression and sexual liberation.
Sexual repression is Nurse Ratched as she not in a relationships sexually as she is a figure of authority.
Sexual liberation is Candy as she sleeps with Billy without batting an eyelid and also kisses McMurphy before she sleeps with Billy.

3. Masculinity is represent as a passive in contrast to stereotypical cinema representations.
All the patients are very passive with how they are tried with no humanity and not like people more like objects. However RP McMurphy rebels against how passive the patients are acting and being treated as they are not getting better because of they are being treated.

Vertigo

1. The male character loses his strength and power as he becomes more obsessed with the female.
This happens when Scottie sees Judy after Madeleine's death. Scottie losses his strength and power as he gets to involved in trying to change Judy into Madeleine with her clothes and hair and makeup.

2. The representations of gender reflects the pre-feminist gender politics of the late 1950's.
The way Judy is treated by Scottie when he constantly changing her appearance and clothes which show why people were pre-feminist in the late 50's because women were treated so badly and treated like something that needed to be controlled, looked after and lead.

3. The audience's point of view switches to the female character after they (the audience) are made aware of her deeds through her confession. This strengthens the female character.
In Vertigo, the female character is strengthened as she reveals she was Madeleine and she has pulled off this murder with Elster right before Scottie's eyes. His love for this women shows his weakness which made her stronger as a character as still carried out what she meant to do by Elster.
