Mise-en-scene in the credits of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

1. What does the imagery of the opening shots (the credit sequence) suggest to the audience?

The opening sequence with the credits suggest to the audience that there is a bright character full of life as a car which represents McMurphy as it is speedy full of pace and light however he also in the car as he cuts through the darkness around the mountains shown in the credit sequence. The mountain is the bleak and cold place which is the mental institution and McMurphy is like a breath of fresh air.
By the end McMurphy has pierced through the lives of the other characters and have left them with a very much changed perspective of humanity and how they should live their lives.

2. Compare the different ways that we are introduced to the two main characters Nurse Ratched and RP McMurphy.

When we first meet the characters, Nurse Ratched is the first person we meet in the film which would represent the dominance she has over McMurphy throughout the film as she is a Nurse and he is a mental patient who has been sent in for evaluation then ends up being admitted. The red light above Nurse Ratched as she walks in shows her underlaying danger that she possesses to McMurphy and the other the patients emotionally. The Nurse is also dressed in a black cloak suggests she is malicious and villainy character. When we meet McMurphy he is in handcuffs showing his weakness and that he is restrained in the film later on. The emotion shown by RP McMurphy when he is uncuffed shows that he thinks he is in for an easy ride in the mental institution. The blue top that McMurphy is wearing could show his masculinity that is slowly stripped away throughout the film. The black leather jacket this shows rebellion already as we know by his clothes that he is convict and would be found unusual for a mental hospital. The gender role in the 1970's are subverted as males are always seen as dominant even in the modern day. Nurse Ratched is in control and RP McMurphy is not which would completely opposite. The relationship that is shown between the characters is shown to not be a good one as she is clearly shown by the different clothing and the performance as she is very serious and straight to work whereas McMurphy is boisterous and all over the place with excitement this is shown to present the disagreement that they are bound to have within the mental hospital. The lighting that they both walking into as the Nurse flicks from dark to light which shows that she thinks what she actually doing is right but what she is doing is actually making the men worse instead of helping.
