[20] This essay will scrutinise the difference ways gender is represented by analysing the main characters RP McMurphy and Scottie in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Vertigo. 1. What does the imagery of the opening shots (the credit sequence) suggest to the audience? The opening sequence with the credits suggest to the audience that there is a bright character full of life as a car which represents McMurphy as it is speedy full of pace and light however he also in the car as he cuts through the darkness around the mountains shown in the credit sequence. The mountain is the bleak and cold place which is the mental institution and McMurphy is like a breath of fresh air. The opening sequence of Vertigo poses a number of enigmas such as Does Scottie get his fear if heights from that incident? or How does he get of the roof?  The purpose of the opening sequence is to show us that he has Acrophobia which is an important part of the film. Plot Summary  The film Vertigo is about a man called Gavin Elster as a retired police detective "Scottie" who has acrophobia (a fear of heights) to come out of retirement and help a friend from his college days by keeping an eye on his wife Madeleine who he fears is possessed by a dead women called Carlotta Valdes. We see throughout the film that Scottie falls in love with Madeleine Elster as he is following her and when he interacts with after she jumps into the bay. The meaning in the opening sequence of Halloween is created by the performance of the two teenagers who seem to be in love which makes his murder more shocking and also is more intimate for the audience. This also means we can connect with the killer as the film started with us looking through his eyes as this is a point of view shot with no cuts or edits this shows life truly, as there are no cuts or edits in reality.
